Erica St. John
Founder of Singer Sanctuary, rescues abused, neglected, and abandoned animals
"It has always been my life long dream to run an animal sanctuary. I love spending time with my animals, and seeing them happy and healthy. It breaks my heart to know that their are so many animals out there that are in bad situations, so it is my mission and dream to live in a world where animals are treated with compassion and humans learn to live more sustainably, so that everyone has an environment in which they can thrive in." Erica St. John is an advocate standing up for animal rights. She and her daughter are the founders of singersanctuary.org/ , a sanctuary devoted to rescuing abused, neglected, and abandoned animals. Before the sanctuary opened in June 2019, my upstander volunteered at many shelters in the LA area. Erica St. John is an upstander because she fights against animal abuse, and she decided to act upon her vision and actually be the change she wants to see in the world.

What It Takes To Be an Upstander
"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples."
-Mother Teresa
I think this quote shows that you can be the start to a big change in the world, even if you can't do it alone. This quote can also convey that just reaching out and taking one small action can really lead to many big changes in the world, because it just takes one person to cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.
Another quote that I think really embodies what it means to be an upstander is one by John Wesley.
"Do all the good you can.
By all the means you can.
In all the ways you can.
In all the places you can.
At all the times you can.
To all the people you can.
As long as ever you can."
This quote is very powerful, because I think it really gets across the message of what it means to be an upstander. It talks about taking action; being the good in the world whenever you can, and to whoever you can. I think that this quote really resembles and captures the true meaning of an upstander. Someone who devotes their life to being a good person, being kind and doing the right thing whenever they can.
