Lauren Flores
Lauren works for Mt. San Antonio Gardens Life Care nonprofit senior community, and she is the Director of Life Enrichment for the skilled nursing residents who live in a life care senior community in Pomona, CA. Recently in quarantine she set up a YouTube channel to read to the elderly, and from time to time she will share some jokes to get a little laugh in from time to time. Lauren is an upstander because she helps the disabled elderly with things they may struggle with in their day to day life, and during quarantine she has found a way to still stay connected with them by reading to them through YouTube, and before the pandemic started she would put together little get togethers so that the elderly could see their families and friends.

"My favorite memory is helping plan a special black tie candlelight dinner for the residents and their families."

" At times you feel helpless to be able to help those who already needed so much help before COVID. The barriers can be overwhelming however it does allow for more opportunities for creativity to arise as well."
✽ Being an upstander is being someone who notices things that might not seem right or fair to the people around them, and they find a way to help with that problem and bring joy to someone else's day or life, and brings joy to you as well. They make an impact on the world that benefits the communities around us.

I learned that we can find ways to problem solve in these hard times if you have persistence, and a good mindset, incorporating these things in my everyday life can just be having a growth mindset, and difficult times don't mean just give up, coming up with other ways to stay connected with people and help one another is a better way to solve things.

"Not everyone is cut out for this work. But if you feel you have the patience and creativity to be successful with it, then be sure to take care of yourself first when you are giving care to others."
