What does being an upstander mean? |
Lennon Standridge doesn’t work for any organization, but he has always wanted to change the world. Lennon goes out every weekend to give money and food to homeless shelters, and sometimes he himself will go and volunteer for the shelters. During our interview, he said, “Taking care of others make me happy, and I love seeing the look of joy on their faces whenever I volunteer.” Besides helping out on the weekends, Lennon also tries to go to shelter whenever he has free or extra time during the weekdays. The biggest donation he has given was a total sum of 250 dollars. He has helped multiple people get houses and jobs again, and even got a certificate for how much he gave to the people.

To me, being an upstander means doing something for the community, or something that affects others in a good way (without wanting something back for it usually). Being an upstander takes time, hard work, and being action oriented. Some people don't have the time or effort to do things for others, but upstanders give because they like to. I feel like being action oriented also affects that, because not lots of people can go and truly say they would've done something in a situation, while upstanders definitely would have stood up using actions.
"Before I met a woman with 3 kids, she had been living on the streets for years, and gave most of her food to her children. After meeting her and helping her, I wanted to cry at her selflessness. It really struck me how much motherly love could do."
